She mounted the jars onto reclaimed wood using hose clamps, then filled them up with potting soil and planted herbs in a sunny hallway! In her tutorial, she says she used new mason jars, but I bet that this would work with eclectic glassware from the thrift store, too! Or, you can start saving jars as you use them up in the kitchen.

The only change I'd make to the design is to fill the bottom 1/4 to 1/3 of the way with rocks, to give the plants some drainage. After drowning a perfectly healthy oregano plant this summer, I've learned my lesson!

h/t: CRAFT

Related posts:

Sustainable Packaging Win: T-Shirts in Mason Jars

Simple Reuse: Protect Glass with Tin Cans

Seedling: System of Biodegradable Nestling Planters

deeglohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11067646897599298950noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5921727657411544560.post-90452936704982492122010-06-01T05:41:00.000-07:002010-06-01T05:49:40.923-07:00Weight WatchersSo, I have been doing Weight Watchers for the past four weeks. I have lost 7 pounds so far. This past week I fell off the wagon and although I didn't completely abandon my new eating habits I indulged in more sweets than I should have. The sweets are a big problem for me, I love sugar. I also didn't go the YMCA at all last week. I was just too tired and busy. I really feel awful about not going but I did alot of yard work and housework over the weekend which kind of makes up for missing the gym, right?

Well anyway, this week I am definitely back on my weight loss/lifestyle plan. I want to make sure I do everything I can to live a full life and be here for my children and their children (when they get old enough to have them) for many years to come. So wish me luck, I'm going in :)

deeglohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11067646897599298950noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5921727657411544560.post-12087126034525607312010-02-09T12:31:00.000-08:002010-02-09T12:34:30.290-08:00Design Inspiration: Black Doors | Apartment Therapy DC<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 338px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiClg1yLh44lHhiegjmKhhIn4pl_JkAGjxoHp4hvIDr7ZVOfA5H6ZYut3urc8ZJ-87GKwgAGC0TehxSqNGZWrTdwFhdVGvh5p53qztRy4waNwtHsl1qgGEvldijmMMT7UPqM6KQKNjqbbQ/s400/domino_via_frolic_rect540.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5436344698505771250" />
I think I would like something like this between my living and dining rooms. I know it wasn't the flu but more like the mini flu. By Sunday, the fever was gone but I still have the stuffy nose, and now I have a sore throat and my left ear is clogged so when I talk it is in stereo, so happy new year to me.

deeglohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11067646897599298950noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5921727657411544560.post-21129746545938878092010-01-02T09:54:00.000-08:002010-01-02T09:55:48.517-08:00Happy New YearSo, it's a new year. It was an accidental breeding and I was upset that it happened. When I first got her, I got her with the intention of breeding her and I did, once. The first litter was ok and I sold two of the puppies and kept two and one died.

After, that I decided not to breed anymore because I felt it was irresponsible for me to breed dogs when there are so many that need homes in shelters.

So anyway it had been three years and got lucky with keeping her away from male dogs when she went into heat. Then, this winter I was working in the yard and had her outside with me and my other dogs. I looked over and she and my daughter's dog, Cesar, were tied together. Nothing I could do then because you can't pull them apart without injuring one or both of them.

So, we have six beautiful Cavalier King Charles Spaniel/Pomeranian puppies. I have been fortunate in that on the day I listed them in the newspaper I got three interested people and received one deposit. One of my friends from school is getting one and one of my daughter'sfriends is getting one. We decided to keep one, just couldn't help it.

When Scarlet had her first litter, they were pure breed CKCS pups. Unfortunately my male, Jack, died two years ago. One of the puppies she had was a tricolor and I sold her to my cousin. A decision I regret because she turned out to be a beautiful, loving dog that I would have loved to have. So this time we decided to keep one.

deeglohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11067646897599298950noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5921727657411544560.post-67996595558730451362009-03-15T13:29:00.000-07:002009-05-15T16:43:59.644-07:00Hair progress

It has been 9 1/2 months since my last perm. I love having my hair long, but I am ready to cut it so I can see the beauty of my natural hair. I said I will wait until it has been one year to the BC. I am starting to get impatient but I know I would not be comfortable with a TWA.

Two weeks ago I used henna for the first time. The smell was not too bad. I am happy with the effects I got and the color it deposited into my hair. I will definitely be doing this monthly.

I have still been washing my hair with shampoo but I make sure it does not have sulfates and my conditioner has no cones. I have been using Aubrey's Honeysuckle Rose. I love the way it smells but the conditioner does not really help to much with detangling. I have started to think about mixing a little bit of a cheapie, non cone conditioner to it to help with detangling.

I'll post pics of the before and after henna.

deeglohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11067646897599298950noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5921727657411544560.post-76403502644805975222009-02-28T09:23:00.001-08:002009-02-28T09:23:12.528-08:00Caramel for hair?The Caramel Treatment - a Natural Hair Softener
This article explains the benefits of a caramel treatment on natural black hair and how you can make your own homemade version of it.
http://www.associatedcontent.comarticle/1230751/the_caramel_treatment_a_natural_hair.html

deeglohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11067646897599298950noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5921727657411544560.post-16579785653173475612009-02-09T05:02:00.001-08:002009-02-09T05:02:47.126-08:00Clearing out the sh**Colon Cleanse: Psyllium Husk for Detoxification
Finding its way into popular fiber supplements but available on its own, psyllium husk provides the ultimate one-herb colon cleanse.
http://www.associatedcontent.comarticle/20367/colon_cleanse_psyllium_husk_for_detoxification.html

deeglohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11067646897599298950noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5921727657411544560.post-8821765217496582892009-02-05T18:00:00.001-08:002009-02-05T18:12:08.908-08:00School and term papersI am going back to school for my degree in Health Care Mgmt. I love going to school and learning new things, I don't even mind doing term papers; what I do hate is doing oral presentations. I just do not understand why teachers insist on this. I am a very shy person, who does not like to draw alot of attention. I totally understand the whole thing about being a well rounded student but how is making me stand up in front of a room of people, that I hardly know, going to make me anything but a nervous, stuttering mess? Why do they feel the need to humiliate people this way? I feel that doing an oral presentation should be extra credit and a choice, not mandatory.

deeglohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11067646897599298950noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5921727657411544560.post-32605366032593792192009-01-27T06:15:00.000-08:002009-01-27T06:21:02.141-08:00Oil paint is a disasterThis weekend, I painted to of my kitchen doors. Since they were previously painted with oil paint, I primed them first, with oil based primer. This is the recommendation I have seen doing research on the internet. Well, after priming I painted with a latex paint.

When I took the painter's tape down, the tape peeled the paint right off with it. Maybe it has not had enough time to cure, but I think I will just stop trying to take the easy way out and strip the doors.

Well at least I know what I am going to be doing the rest of this week, Yah!

deeglohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11067646897599298950noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5921727657411544560.post-24966446693347966672009-01-20T19:18:00.000-08:002009-01-21T05:00:50.894-08:00It snowed!<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglpx3gvNtMGsSANdiu-z-aUA5R2YnPvGJGRkEKUS2CCx836GlxJk8XS079ppaDKi3ncjG_C_xUgVdgtjp3MfIYQm8QoLPeg5up6JY97jiUviF_cvIcWKeYqQpkE5R_GCa78ZJ4ONCWSBc/s320/100_1205.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293730873573276706" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFE7Q7d1rfbcsAKmLjUCMJZdsLiA65Sc6W7XqBtkvKlzhvIpEqr9r2bc1n7Dr5p4hUhjNeA6w9Rec-NODOsx2eHEcDWiQH29wfT9CWdRd_53TLHoKUllT-wbTnF7qmi7j7c5alj1SgZto/s320/100_1209.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293730867872275634" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixti6jcr2Z0eF00SzQb8eRKXSCjBYV9_uExHDUNf_oIffyEUQ8owV9PPlpgeBuatkAnFSw79PDBHhv-s92kIl3T86ph_YDGR8AmMkmmX_mIpdWa47SOXmA5W0BuSNEgQxMV-Y6lmjwNlE/s320/100_1215.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293730860312414626" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCuO9yW7_pWU9d_J9CqE5jZnSxSozhHYP9aAUwseVJiA9rCJs-xqL6aJjzs-1L37O4bwFwRlF57nFaG2Kdw3ZnSldJ9e17lQODMtk01XPDd5rYQun2ng8v9-HwRG2csgIW8oxQ-NdkqyA/s320/100_1206.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293730853033879346" />
So, it started snowing today at around 7 am. Last night schools were two hours late, this morning school was closed. At first I thought it was ridiculous but I do want my children to be safe. It did only snow 2 inches but, the kids were safe.

I got a call this evening at 3:00 that school is closed tomorrow, I guess it because of the ice? So that means that this week the kids only had school one day because Monday was the holiday and Thursday and Friday are teacher work days, so that means no school. Oh to be a kid again.

deeglohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11067646897599298950noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5921727657411544560.post-73274353077514217902009-01-19T20:06:00.000-08:002009-01-19T20:11:21.557-08:00SnowThey are calling for snow where I live, 3-6 inches. I live in Eastern, NC. I went to the store this evening just to get something to eat before school. The store was crowed, I am sure people were stocking up for the storm. I find this very amusing.

I am from Baltimore and even though it does not snow alot, it is funny how in places were it hardly ever snows people kind of panic. The school is opening two hours late and the county government and courts are closed. Some doctor's offices are closed too. I mean, it is only 3 inches of snow.

deeglohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11067646897599298950noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5921727657411544560.post-17202371209829595052009-01-18T19:33:00.001-08:002009-01-18T19:38:39.778-08:00CookingI know how to cook, and whenever I do cook it is good, unless you are under the age of 18. I do not cook extravagant, gourmet meals, just everyday food. But for some reason my children never seem to like what I cook. They try something at my mother's house and I like it, then when I make it at home they don't. This is very frustrating, especially in these times when I am trying to save money where I can.

Today I made 15 bean soup with turkey, pork loin with potatoes and carrots, and greens. This is enough food to last for the week (lunch and dinner for me and dinner for my kids). I am sure tomorrow night I will hear "there is nothing to eat in this house" from one of my children.

What is a mother to do? I am open for suggestions.

deeglohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11067646897599298950noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5921727657411544560.post-90271906947779261692009-01-17T22:36:00.000-08:002009-01-18T19:32:44.136-08:00Getting things doneYesterday morning when I woke up I planned on working on my paper for school, instead I went in my kitchen and noticed a crack in the paint. My house was built in 1920 and has plaster walls. Last spring I painted my kitchen but did not really take the time to fill the cracks in properly.

So I started scraping the cracked paint, the next thing I knew I had scraped almost a quarter of the paint off. Since there are about five layers of paint, I had to fill in the scraped area with more plaster. So I filled it in and then I started working on cleaning my daughters' room. The next thing I know it is 6:00 and I am still working on housework, so much for the paper.

deeglohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11067646897599298950noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5921727657411544560.post-40881418493971672192009-01-16T21:12:00.000-08:002009-01-16T21:14:43.354-08:00Getting seriousI have had this blog since 2/08. I did one post since I signed up and that was six months later. One of my new year resolutions is to post something every day. This blog is not really about anything specific, just a place for me to ramble about whatever.

deeglohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11067646897599298950noreply@blogger.com0
